How can I start a petition to have a Cell Phone Tower put up in my area?
Ok I live in a very small town in Pennsyvania…If you drive 20-30 minutes in any direction from my house you can get cell phone service. But within that 20 mile radius there is no service. I want to know if theres something I can do, because it really sucks not being able to use one, and I have a prepaid one now and its almost more expensive to have one of those then it is to have a plan, but not worth it if you cant even use it from ur own home!

if you are absolutely certain that there is no carrier and no tower at all……

and it has nothing to do with the fact that your town has forbid zoning of towers….
In most cases it is better to contact the carriers and see if one is interested. get your local government leaders to make the call. a petition saying X amount of people will sign up if they build a tower is an excellent start. and i would definitely approach verizon and t-mobile (800Mhz) providers first as the signals travel further.
if its clear that the pure math / economics isn’t going to be compelling to a provider, call your state regulator or better yet have your local official do it. i am not certain how much of the universal service fee fund that carriers have access to in pa. the federal fund was setup so that every american could have a land line!!! so letting cell phone carriers use it is controversial…
if this doesn’t work have your town look into building a tower and leasing it to the major carriers. see link for related discussions, but beware tower economics get a little technical. better to just start a petition in your town.
check all websites such as at&t, tracfone, verizon, ect.. and see which company supplies service to your area. The network makes a HUGE difference.
you can`t do anything. the phone company chooses where they need towers and then go about secureing the land to put them on. it is all about making the most money so if there is not a large population there is not much money to be made. i know this because i am a land surveyer who works on new and existing sites. sometimes if another phone company has an existing tower a different one will lease space to put there antenna on it .
