I got a job at a call center working for nationstar in customer service. What should I expect?? Is training hard? What all will I be doing?

Mandatory Shift Bid – filing unemployment?

My job just announced that we will be having a "mandatory shift bid". I’ve worked here for 11 years and have only worked Monday through Friday during a day shift – usually with a start time of 8am. This company is a very well-known online auction site and I work in the North American Customer Support center in a state outside of the home offices in California. As the company has grown, so has their need to provide a variety of ways to help our customers. A big portion of our support channel has switched to phones. I have never worked phones and instead work in more of a site security aspect.

With this new shift bid, we’ve been told that it will be 100% "performance" or "statistics" based. Unfortunately, this new department is relatively new for me – 4 months. I do not have the performance or statistics to compete with more experienced reps in this department.

I’ll admit that I’ve been increasingly unhappy with my work and the changes, but this is the final straw. I have appropriately addressed my concern to my supervisor and been assured that it’s "right for the company" and the "right thing for employees" and "it’ll all work out". In the meeting where we were told about this, we were "chastised" for being upset over it because many call center type employers do shift bids quarterly and we shouldn’t complain. My point is that I don’t (and have never done) inbound or outbound phone support. My whole department doesn’t do phone work for the most part. We make calls occasionally for site security issues, but we do not support security issues through phones.

Anyway, my question is this… if I end up with a weekend shift or a swing/grave shift, something that I do not want to work, have never worked and do not want to work, could I quit and file unemployment for the dramatic shift change? I am a single mom of a special needs kid and I do not want to work swing shift or weekends. I try to be with him as much as possible. I took this job because of the steady work hours and days off.

Personally, I suspect I’ll still get weekends off, but they want me to switch to a 5am start time like the majority of our team. They allowed me (along with 5 other recently transferred employees) to keep our 8am start times when we were absorbed into this new department 4 months ago. Because of our later start times, we are unable to deskshare with a swing person and it causes a seating shortage. Seating shortages are many and the company is actively seeking a larger building, but for now, it is what it is.

In addition, up until last year, employees were allowed to work at home – telecommute. Last year, after 6 years of the telecommuting program, it was decided that it was "no longer a good fit" for the company and all telecommuters were required to come back into the office full-time. During this transition, several employees quit, but most remained.

While it’s clearly obvious that my employer doesn’t give a rats ass about us- cutting benefits, stricter policies, no bonuses, no stock options, etc… I don’t have faith that my tenure will factor into my shift bid. I’ve been wanting to quit and return to school or explore a new line of work, but for all the normal reasons was hesitant to do so. Maybe this is my chance.

So, even after all my ramblings, my question is still this – If they change my shift dramatically, I want to quit and file for unemployment. I pretty sure that my employer will fight it and does anyone know what my chances are of winning my appeal? Do I have a leg to stand on? Anyone have any insight or experience with this?

(FYI – my daughter just won an appeal with Unemployment against her employer and it seemed like they were very fair and open to hearing both sides in the hearing.)
I don’t need to hear how lucky I am to have a job and how ungrateful I am as well. My point is this… If you’d been at your work for 11 years working a day shift and were suddenly forced to work a grave shift, would you do it too?

While we all should be lucky to have a job – and i am, but is it fair (or legal) to dramatically change someones shift and expect it to fit their life. What about my school? My daycare? My little league coaching? My girl scout troop? My sunday school class I teach? Taking care of my elderly Alzhiemer mom on Saturdays and Sundays?

I don’t believe that they can legally offer me a drastically changed shift and tell me to take it or leave it. And even it’s it’s legal, is it even morally right?

I’m not some kid looking to become a bum. I’ve worked here for 11 years!!! I don’t want to milk the system, but if this new shift doesn’t fit my life and obligations, I have no choice but to quit.

What Job should I choose?

Job A: Its a call center position where i will be dealing with customers, I have no experience with that and I don’t know if i will be good at it, but it will give me that experience i am trying to seek, i’v always hated telemarketers but its inbound calls so its ok.

Job B: ecommerce codorinater, where i will be taking orders from the website and processing them and sending them out, i am comfortalbe with this role and have experience with it, this job will provide me with a little customer service thru email and such, i am my own boss since i am the only person to run the department, but its twice the distance as job A.

So do i go with a job which will give me more experience in an area i am not good at or be in a job i am comfotable in.
